The New England Scholastic Band Association (hereinafter "NESBA") was originally founded by a small group of High School Band Directors in early 1977 for the purpose of providing a competitive outlet for high school color guards during the winter months. The New England High School Color Guard Circuit, as it was known at the time, then turned its attention to standardizing and coordinating the rules and procedures for marching band competitions. NESBA has continued growth ever since.

Membership in NESBA is open to all secondary schools and other performing organizations in the New England area. NESBA provides competitive events for everyone through both the Fall Marching Band Activities and the Winter Activities Programs.

In 2017 NESBA celebrated its 40th anniversary.  Over the past 40 years NESBA has become a leader in providing students with multiple performance opportunities and in helping school programs fund their arts programs.  With relationships being developed with local, national and regional organizations, NESBA is committed to helping New England musical organizations find a place to perform and enjoy the gift of music and friendship.

In 1985, NESBA began providing financial assistance to deserving students who would be furthering their education in the field of music by awarding two $500 scholarships. This continuing program has been expanded to include scholarships for band front (color guard) members and for students who will be non-music majors who have played an important role in the programs of NESBA member units. The number of scholarships has now grown to 6 with the support of Vic Firth and many local vendors who believe in the students we serve.

Today, NESBA is proudly represented by some of New England’s finest marching bands, color guards and percussion ensembles in the country.
